It was early Fall in 2000 and like most kids that had just graduated, I found that the Summer had gone by way to fast, and it was time to journey off on my own to college. After attending Bethany Lutheran College for 2 years, being broke, and still having no clue what I wanted to do, I decided to take a break from college and make some money.
I’d always really liked doing jobs that had me outside and being active. I had my own part-time lawn service since I was a kid starting in 1993. Over the years, I continued with that and worked on the lawn and landscape crew for a couple area municipalities. I also worked on the grounds crew for a successful golf course. In between, I tried other types of jobs, doing everything from delivering flowers, stocking shelves overnight, and construction. I knew I needed to find a job that I didn’t dread going to everyday, and would build a future for myself.
While driving back from lunch one afternoon in the spring of 2005, I happened to notice a lawn care service mowing someone’s yard. Later that day, on my drive home, I remember looking at that same lawn and thinking to myself, “Boy, I hope they are not paying them for that.” None of the grass was blown off the driveway, numerous spots were not trimmed, and a few areas were scalped. The rest of that night and the following week I couldn’t stop thinking about how, even though my business was only part-time, I offered a better quality of service to people. It was then, that I decided I needed to expand my lawn care business. This also made sense considering half the other jobs I have worked in my life had one thing in common, lawn mowing.
With some money that I had saved up, I decided to add a zero turn Toro riding mower and new trailer to my other equipment. Over the course of the next few years I was able to slowly build my business, all while working full time at a lumberyard. Then in 2008 I got a call from my mom that would change everything for me. She said she had come across a listing on Craigslist, advertising a lawn care business for sale. A month later with the help of a loan, I was fortunate enough to sign the final papers to purchase the existing business. I now had enough clients to be able to quit my full time job. At that point, I knew I would be building a future for myself doing work that I really enjoyed.
